Columbia Sportswear began in 1938 when Paul Lamfrom, a German immigrant, bought a small hat company in Portland, Oregon and renamed it after the nearby Columbia River. Under the leadership of his daughter Gert Boyle from the 1970s, Columbia evolved from a modest family business into a global outdoor brand known for innovation, durability, and performance — combining technical design with a spirit of adventure that remains central to the company today.
